Peter Klassen passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026 at Altona Hospital. He was born to Reverend John. J and Anna (nee Friesen) Klassen on September 10, 1047, in Altona. He was predeceased by his parents and all of his siblings. He is survived by 1 sister-in-law Margaret Klassen, nieces, nephews, and special friend Phyllis Rempel and her family.
He attended school in Shöenau and had many stories to tell with the highlight being the baseball games that were played between neighboring school districts.
Peter got polio at a young age which left him with a walking disability. He found schoolwork difficult, so he started working at different jobs early. He started his own business "Pete's Mowing" and ran it for more than 20 years. Walking behind the lawn mower in the summer and clearing snow in the winter was not easy but was good physiotherapy for him.
When his parents sold their house, he moved out on his own into the Friendship Manor. While living here he had many friends bring him meals and baked goods which he appreciated.
Peter faithfully attended the Altona Sommerfeld Church Sunday School as a child. He had one teacher tell him, "Friends are worth more than money" and to Peter, friends were priceless. Peter was baptized upon confession of his faith in 1968. Attending church was important to him so when he couldn't drive anymore, he bought a scooter so he could still go. In winter he would receive rides (thank you to the drivers).
Peter got sick in November 2019 and after a long hospital stay it was decided that he couldn't live on his own anymore. He moved into Eastview in 2021. This meant that going to his cousins' gatherings and day trips with friends couldn't be done as much as before and he really missed that. But he was still able to organize times that people would bring food to Eastview and eat with him at Christmas, birthdays, or any occasion. He really enjoyed celebrating his 75" birthday at Altona Park with so many friends.
Then in the summer of 2024 Phyllis Rempel moved into Eastview. It wasn't long and they became special friends, spending a lot of time together. That fall, with both having a scooter, they would ask friends to join them at local restaurants for coffee and meals. Due to his mobility, that ended the following spring. Spending time with Phyllis gave him joy and happiness.
"If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything." Peter knew where he stood and would not be afraid to let you know especially when it came to expressing his belief and love for his Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Special thanks to all the people who over the years have given him rides, brought food, phoned him, visited, and especially prayed for him. To the staff at Eastview and hospital, thank you for the care, all those who participated in the funeral service, and Wiebe Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the Altona Sommerfeld Mennonite Church, with burial at the Altona Cemetery. Viewing will be at Wiebe Funeral Home Altona on Tuesday, April 14 from 1:00 - 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 15 from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. and at the church prior to the service.
