Mary Hamm

October 21, 1930 — June 15, 2015

Mary Hamm

Mom was born on October 21, 1930 to Peter A. and Sara Rempel in the Amsterdam School District north-east of Altona, she was the second of five children.  Mom attended the Langivan School till middle of grade 7, when she stayed at home to help on the family farm.

In the spring of 1954 Mom was baptized upon the confession of her faith by Bishop David Schultz in the Bergthaler Church of Altona.  Mom and Dad were united in marriage on June 11, 1961 and moved to Neu-bergthal and lived and farmed there for 32 years.  Their marriage was blessed with four children.  In 1993 Mom and Dad retired to Altona where Mom could continue her hobbies of gardening and planting as many different kinds of flowers that she could find.  While living in Altona, Mom and Dad were able to spend countless hours with their grandkids entertaining them with learning how to bake buns, make waffles, and tea parties.

It was very important to Mom that each grandchild have a keep-sake of her so each grandchild received a quilted baby blanket and a personalized denim blanket.  Mom loved to do crafts of varying kinds and as long as she was able would not sit down without having something close by.  In 2004 Mom and Dad moved into the Buffalo apartments and lived there until after Dad’s passing in 2010.  At this point Mom’s needs were changing and a move to the Gardens took place where she lived until spring of 2014 when she moved to Eastview Place in Altona and lived there until her passing.

Mom’s latter years were a challenge for her as she had to deal with varying stages of Alzheimer’s disease and that came with many challenges for her and her family.  Mom’s life came to a peaceful end on Monday, June 15, 2015 at 10:05 p.m. when God called her home to end her suffering.  She was surrounded by her family.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Willie of nearly 49 years, her parents Peter and Sara Rempel, and one brother.

Mom is survived by her children: daughter Elaine and husband Gerald, their children Bethany and fiancé Adam, Janaya, and Bryan; daughter Elvira and husband Vic, their children Michael, Matthew, Rachael, and Jessica; son Rob and wife Tracey, their children Nik, and Cassidy; son Larry and wife Teresa, their daughters Emilee, and Erin; Also two sisters, one brother and four sisters-in-law.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Altona Bergthaler Mennonite Church with interment to follow at the Neubergthal Cemetery.  Viewing will be at Wiebe Funeral Home Altona on Thursday, June 18, 2015 from 9:00 am to 9:00 p.m., Friday, June 19, 2015 from 9:00 am to 6:00 p.m. and at the church prior to the service.

We as a family would like to thank the staff at Eastview Place and the Gardens for all the care and help that they provided for Mom, also to Dr. Bueddefeld and Pastor Rick Neufeld for all the help and caring that they provided.
