Helen Neufeld

With her family at her side, Helen Neufeld passed away at 2:15 am on Sunday June 12, 2022 at the Altona Hospital. Helen Neufeld passed away at the age of 95 years. Helen was predeceased by husband Bill Neufeld; parents Helena Klippenstein and Peter Giesbrecht; Son Terry Neufeld; Grandson Jamie Neufeld and 4 sisters - Susie, Margaret, Agatha and Anne. Mom is survived by Son Howard Neufeld of Morden; Grandsons Robert Neufeld of Rosenfeld and Jonathon Neufeld of Pilot Mound; Granddaughter Jessica O'Connor of Hamilton, Ontario and their families and many nieces and nephews.

Mom was born Helena Giesbrecht on January 28^th 1927 in the Blumenhof village of Altona. She grew up in the Altona area often playing by the Buffalo Creek. Mom completed grade 10 and then DW Friesens recruited her to work at their post office store. In June 1948 she married Bill Neufeld. They decided to follow their friends and move to Southern Ontario in 1951 where they stayed until returning to Altona in 1978.

While living in Ontario, they socialized with their friends almost every weekend for the entire 27 years plus often hosted visiting relatives. They adopted 2 children – Terry in 1962 and Howard in 1963. In 1964 they were at the Schmidt home in Mississauga the day the Beatles were first seen on TV and at the home of George Neufeld in 1977 the day it was announced Elvis died.  In 1978 mom decided we needed to move to Altona so she could help take care of her mom. Within days of arrival, she was again offered a Job at DW Friesens where she worked sewing books in the bindery until she retired.     

Mom loved to sew, and after her retirement made many quilts for the MCC and family members. She also worked at the MCC store for some time. She also like to curl and watch a lot of sports. Mom was a thoughtful person right up to the end – hours before her death she offered her son to help her eat her last meal.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Altona Bergthaler Mennonite Church with burial at the Altona Cemetery.  Viewing will be at Wiebe Funeral Home Altona on Wednesday, June 15 from 1:00 - 9:00 p.m. and at the church prior to the service.
