Greg Sawatzky

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Jason Sawatzky on November 17th, 2025, at the Altona Hospital at the age of 53. Greg passed away peacefully, surrounded by family after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Greg was born on March 21, 1972, at the Altona Hospital. He was the first child for his parents, Pete and Carol Sawatzky.

Greg was predeceased by his grandparents.

Left to mourn his passing are his three children: Jasmin, Gage and Savannah, as well as his grandson Jaxton. He is also survived by his parents, Pete and Carol Sawatzky, his sister Jacquie Cherewayko and her husband Scott, his brother Collin Sawatzky and niece Caitlynn, and his brother Kevin Sawatzky, his wife Gabbi and three nephews Reid, Zac and Denver.

Greg spent the first years of his childhood living in Halbstadt, after which the family then moved to Gnadenfeld and later Altona. Even though Greg was very young when they left Halbstadt, we had many family ties to that area and Halbstadt always remained a special place to him.

After high school, Greg moved to Winkler where he worked and made many new friends, some of whom he still kept in touch with many years later. While living in the Winkler and Roland area Greg got married and had his three children, Jasmin, Gage and Savannah.

In 2006 Greg decided to move to Fort St. John, B.C. where he got a job as an H2S Safety Supervisor with Trojan Safety Services. He stayed there for over 12 years before coming back to Manitoba.

In May of 2019 Greg entered the Adult & Teen Challenge program. This was a big step for him, but one that he realized he needed to take. After he graduated from the program, he stayed on as an employee for a few years. This was a good time in his life, and he made many good friends through the program.

In 2022 he moved back to Altona and worked at Friesens Corporation until his passing.

Greg went into the Altona Hospital on October 24th and was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer shortly after. He spent three weeks and three days in the hospital before his passing on November 17th. We would like to thank everyone that visited him during that time. Although it was a difficult time for him, he appreciated his visitors so much and loved catching up with people he hadn’t seen in awhile. We would also like to thank the staff at the Altona Hospital for the compassionate care that Greg received.

Greg will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, all things camouflage, and sitting outside having a good visit with a friend.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Rhineland Pioneer Centre on Sunday, November 23rd at 2:00 pm.

Donations in Greg’s memory can be made to Adult and Teen Challenge
