Eva Toews

Eva Toews (nee Zacharias) age 96 of Altona, formerly of Thames, MB, passed away peacefully Monday December 1, 2020 at Eastview Place

She is survived by her husband Peter, children Albert (Evelyn), Ron (Pauline), Leona (John), Jenice (Brian), Grace (Don), Melvin (Peggy), Alfred (Cyndie), Connie, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, 6 sisters, and 2 brothers. She was predeceased by her parents, numerous siblings, and her daughter and son in law Verna and Abe Fehr.

Eva got her education at the Thames school in Bergfeld. Eva was a very hard worker. Her first job was a caregiver for a Dyck family in Manitou. She then met Peter and they dated. Peter always says Eva asked him to marry her. They got married October 28, 1945. They had just finished celebrating their 75th anniversary a month before she passed.

Their first home was in Eigenhof. They moved many times -Piney, Morris, Altona, Niverville, and settled in Schoenthal. In later years Eva spent her time taking care of the family, working on the family farm, milking cows and selling the cream for a few extra dollars. She also dedicated her life to take care of their daughter Connie, who was born with spina bifida. Eva and Peter had taken care of Connie for 50 years when Connie moved to her own home.

At the age of 55 Eva got her first paying job at ADAMH, a home for mentally challenged. She worked their full time until she was 65, and helped part time until she was 70. She always worked hard without complaining.

Eva enjoyed cooking for and feeding all her children. All the boys say that they are their Mom's favorite and all the girls say that they are their Mom's favorite. Eva also loved to shop at Verna's store, the Trendsetter. She was always very trendy in wearing fashionable clothes. She loved to look great and get compliments. She also loved having coffee with her sisters and friends.

When her daughter Verna and son in law Abe died in a plane crash, she could hardly bear the pain. This is a day that the family will never forget. She persevered and found the strength to carry on.

In March 2018, Eva was admitted to the Altona hospital where she stayed until June 2019, at which time she was given a room at Eastview Place. She did very well until January 10, 2020, when she took a bit of a turn. She was bedridden for a little over a week, and then pulled through this and started smiling and talking again. But on November 17 she became bedridden once again and passed on December 1, 2020.

Eva, you are greatly loved and will be dearly missed. God has a better place for you. Rest in peace.

A private graveside service was held at the Altona Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Eastview Place for the care they provided to our mom. Thank you also to Pastor Walter Hiebert for his support and kind service.
