Don Barrie Radford

With heavy hearts and great sadness, we bid farewell to Don Radford, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, who passed away at Boundary Trails Health Centre at the age of 74.

Don was predeceased by his parents Ken and Margaret Radford.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Trudy, his three children, Shanna (Logan), Chris (Kim) and Steven, his grandchildren Andrew and Archer (Shanna), Chloe and Aria (Chris), and Natalie (Steven). Don is also survived by his brother Gord (Joyce), his stepsisters Karen, Lou-Ann and Sandy as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Don was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba on January 25, 1950. He moved to Snow Lake in 1964 and completed high school in 1970. Don went on to attend the University of Manitoba, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated in 1974.  From there, he went to Red River Community College to study Journalism.

In 1976, he was offered his first job at the Red River Valley Echo and with his wife Trudy, whom he met during his university studies, moved to Altona.

Don and Trudy started their family in 1979 when they welcomed their daughter, Shanna, followed by Chris In 1982, and Steven in 1984.

His career in the newspaper industry started as a reporter with the Red River Valley Echo and this journey took him to the position of Managing Editor for the Pembina Publishing Group where he oversaw four local newspapers. He semi-retired in 2013 and worked part-time until 2015 when a heart attack ended his 39 year newspaper career.

Don had many interests including backyard astronomy, reading, researching family history and travelling where he was especially fond of cruises. He was most happy when he was spending time with his three children and six wonderful grandchildren.

Don was very active in his community where he was a board member of the South Central Regional Library and the Altona Police Board. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Altona Fire Department.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 21 at the Millennium Exhibition Centre in Altona. Doors will open at 2:00 pm and the service will start at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Furever Friends Pet Rescue.

The family would like to thank the staff at Boundary Trails Health Centre and the Altona Health Centre for the kind and loving care he received. We would also like to thank Abe and the staff at Wiebe Funeral Home for their exceptional service and kindness.

Don will forever remain in our hearts, his memory a guiding light that will continue to illuminate our lives. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing that he was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed and eternally remembered.
